My Internship Abroad

Can you guess where I went?

Visiting Australia has always been a dream of mine. Studying abroad was out of the question for me, but an internship was still on the table. During the spring of 2018, I was still contemplating which career path I wanted to take. I decided to take the position as a communications and events intern at a communications agency called Cardinal Spin. This internship was heavily based on public relations, and I realized quickly that this isn’t something I want to do. However, I was still learning a lot about myself and the soft skills that I can offer. I learned about:

  • Communication and People Skills

  • Cultural Awareness

  • Creative Problem Solving

  • Adaptability

Even though public relations wasn’t what I wanted to do, I learned a lot about the field, social media, and event planning. With this internship, I was a part of something so cool: The Sydney Film Festival. I did so much for this event, but the best part was opening night. At the beginning of the night, I greeted celebrities at the door and walked them to the red carpet. Then I was able to sit in and watch the opening night movie, The Breaker Uppers (which is now on Netflix…how cool is that?). After that was the after-party. I felt famous for being a part of an after-party with all of these celebrities. It was probably one of the best nights I have ever experienced.

Other duties I had working at Cardinal Spin:

  • Managed interview scheduling for the Sydney Film Festival

  • Administered appointments and itineraries for celebrities utilizing a specialized CRM system

  • Created marketing and advertising social media posts for local businesses

  • Published media releases

  • Monitored branding for film festival reviews

  • Created reports for presentations to clients

Fun things I did while living in Australia:

  • Scuba dived in the Great Barrier Reef

  • Traveled to Australia’s #1 beach

  • Tried ice cream on pancakes (10/10 recommend)

  • Went to the Australian Centre for the Moving Image Museum

  • Rode in a Helicopter over the ocean

  • Took the Great Ocean Road Tour

  • Relaxed in the Peninsula Hot Springs

Although I learned I didn’t love PR, the summer of 2018 was the best summer of my life. Australia has 95% of my heart.
